Our group participated in this years Wisconsin Science Festival! We had a booth at the Discovery Expo and Science on the Square. We had many wonderful demos and a lot of fun sharing our knowledge with our community here in Madison!
One of our talented undergraduates students, Noah Welke, spent the summer at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory as an intern. There, he did research with Alex Halavanau developing a solid gain medium for XLO at CXI. At the end of the summer, his hard work was awarded well with first place at the LCLS Summer Internship Poster Session! Congratulations Noah, we are very proud of you!

We successfully produced our first high harmonic spectrum! What is pictured is a spectrum of our source, which is an 800nm beam, up-converted, using neon, gas through high harmonic generation (HHG) to create an extreme-ultraviolet beam (XUV)!
Nikhilesh graduated on May 14th with bachelor degrees in physics and computer science! He will be continuing his career at Brown University in their PhD program. Nikhilesh did great work while he was here, and we will miss him, but we wish him all the best on his new adventure in Rhode Island!
Congratulations to Minhal and Jake on their teaching assistant awards! Minhal was awarded Best Fall Teaching Assistant for 2021 and Jake was awarded Outstanding Undergraduate Assistant for Spring 2022.
This week, Professor Bergmann hosted the colloquium speaker, Mark Hunter. Mark visited us all the way from SLAC National Accelerator Lab to share how we can use XFELs to study structural biology!

The second one of our vacuum chambers was leak tested by a couple of our students (from left to right, Zain, Berta). The test went well and it’s now found its home in the lab!
